Fun Off Slope Activities to Keep you Entertained During a White Out
November 8, 2018 by Dana Millard
Fresh snow – these are the two words that we so desperately want to hear during the ski season. But with fresh snowfall, usually comes a white out up the mountain. Perfect for the slopes but not so perfect for skiing. For those who don’t want to brave the snowy conditions, here are some ideas for off slope activities to enjoy from the comfort and safety of the resort.
Relax in the Spa
What better way to hide away from the treacherous conditions outside than to spend the day relaxing in your chalet’s luxurious spa? Soothe those sore muscles in the steam room, take a dip in the swimming pool or treat yourself to a full body massage by the in-house therapist. With so many fabulous wellness facilities to enjoy in the chalets, you won’t miss skiing and you may even wish for another white out!
The lavish spa area in Marco Polo includes two top of the range massage beds that you can use until your heart’s content, and will leave you feeling rejuvenated for when the sun makes an appearance again. When forced to participate in non-ski activities, this option can’t be too bad…
Cosy up in the Cinema
If you don’t plan on leaving the comfort of your chalet when it’s snowing heavily outside, retreat to the cinema room where you can put on a good film and savour a warming glass of vin chaud. After all, a movie day is the perfect way to escape the cold weather, especially if it’s in your own chalet! If you can all agree on a movie, the whole family is sure to enjoy this off slope activity , especially if there is popcorn involved!

All Day Après
What’s après ski without the ski? Well just après I guess! Après ski doesn’t just have to be after a day of skiing… when there’s a white out on a ski holiday, it’s acceptable to après all day! Either crack open a bottle of bubbly in your chalet or venture out into the resort to find the best après bars – guaranteed to be full of people hiding from the snow. After a day of après, you may end up dancing on the tables into the evening, just try not to ruin the next day of skiing if the weather is set to improve!
Make the Most of the Fresh Snow
If you don’t fancy being stuck inside all day, why not wrap up warm and make the most of the fresh powder outside? There are so many off slope activities to enjoy in the snow! Go snowshoeing and discover hidden paths through the snowy trees and stop for a warming hot chocolate along the way. Get the kids involved and go sledging in the fresh snow, and maybe even build a snowman – whatever you do, they’ll love playing in the snow and making the most of the weather conditions.
Hit the Shops
Retail therapy is a great way to get over the disappointment of missing out on a day’s skiing, so grab your designer handbag, head into resort and shop ‘til you drop!
Chanel, Moncler, Dior? Courchevel is a ski resort that really does have it all in store. You’ll be spoilt for choice with a vast array of luxury designer shops, making sure you’re seriously in style for the winter. It’s a non ski activity in Courchevel not to be missed, even if it’s just a browse!
Chalet Gentianes is walking distance to the shops and is the ultimate place to admire your new purchases.
Eat Your Way Around Resort
When there’s a white out skiing, it’s the ideal opportunity to sample the local delicacies in the resort restaurants and eat until your heart’s content. Whether you fancy Savoyarde fondue or a mouth-watering steak, there’s plenty to whet your appetite in resort. Even for the true foodies amongst you, the Alps host some of the best Michelin star restaurants in the world, most of which can be found in Courchevel. Check them out in our Courchevel Gourmet Guide.
Safely Ski
A white out doesn’t have to stop you from skiing. Think fresh powder, empty slopes and first tracks… skiing in a white out does have its perks! Always make sure you ski safely in a white out; stick to the pistes, ski in pairs, use the piste markers and try to stick to runs through the trees. But most of all, have fun!
We know that a white out is the last thing that you want on your ski holiday, but with lots of off slope activities you don’t have to waste the day just because you can’t ski, so relax, wrap up, and make the most of the free time to enjoy all that your chalet and the resort has on offer!
